IDI and Fantsuam Foundation Sign MoU to Establish Community-Led Connectivity Hubs in Kaduna State

As part of ongoing efforts to expand access to digital infrastructure and opportunities across Nigeria, Initiative for Digital Inclusion (IDI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Fantsuam Foundation for the establishment of Community Self-Built Sustainable Connectivity Hubs in Kaduna State.

Project Overview

The Community Self-Built Sustainable Connectivity Hub Project is sponsored by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom Government and delivered on its behalf by IDI. The project is designed to help to bridge the digital divide in underserved and unserved Nigerian communities through the deployment of community-driven connectivity hubs powered by renewable energy.

Under this collaboration, IDI and Fantsuam Foundation will jointly facilitate the establishment of two community-led connectivity hubs — one in Bayanloco Community, Kafanchan (Jema’a LGA) and the other in Kukum-Daji Community, Kaura LGA, both in Kaduna State.

These two hubs will provide affordable internet access, digital literacy training, and a sustainable platform for community innovation and empowerment.

Community Engagement

During a recent visit to the host communities, IDI representatives were warmly received by community leaders and youths, who expressed strong enthusiasm and readiness to support the project.

The MoU signing formalizes a shared commitment among IDI, Fantsuam Foundation, and the host communities to work collaboratively toward the successful implementation and long-term sustainability of the hubs.

Roles and Commitments

Under the agreement:

  • IDI will provide technical advisory support on power, connectivity, devices, and training curricula, as well as guidance on the effective use of the facilities.
  • Fantsuam Foundation, in collaboration with the host communities, will oversee construction of the hub physical structures, and lead digital literacy training delivery as well as management of the facilities.
  • The communities will establish Hub Councils to ensure asset security, foster inclusive participation, and promote sustainability, especially promoting access for women and persons with disabilities.

Towards Inclusive Digital Growth

Speaking on the partnership, the Director of IDI reaffirmed its dedication to supporting inclusive and sustainable connectivity initiatives that empower local communities to take ownership of their digital development.

Through initiatives like these, IDI continues to support Nigeria’s vision of building a digitally empowered society and a knowledge-based economy that leaves no community behind, as outlined in the National Broadband Plan (2020–2025) and the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS 2020–2030).
